Pollinator Gardens

Dark orange heliopsis flower

There are two pollinator gardens filled with native plants at the library, as described below. Plant markers identify the plants by their common and botanical names and include the cultivar name when applicable. We encourage visitors to view the plants up close, but not to touch the plants or disturb the insects that are using them. Please look below for our full plant list. If you’re passionate or curious about native plants, please consider joining our Garden Club to share your knowledge and enthusiasm and to help us grow our pollinator gardens in the long term.

Florence Case Memorial Garden

The Florence Case Memorial Garden was created by Jane Case in memory of her mother. Jane Case is owner of Blue Moon Farm Perennials, a nursery specializing in native plants, in Wakefield, RI. The garden is found on the slope behind the library. Large arborvitae trees and ornamental shrubs overlook the garden. Visitors can walk up a stone path to view the plants inside and above. Those who make the journey will discover an interesting surprise.

Wild & Scenic Rivers Garden

In May 2022, volunteers from the Wood-Pawcatuck Wild and Scenic Rivers Stewardship Council transformed a large parking lot island at the library into a beautiful pollinator garden filled with native shrubs, grasses, and perennials. Dave Prescott of Save the Bay and Nan Quinlan, Town of Exeter Representative on the Council, directed volunteers in completing the project. The garden is part of a wider project to introduce native plants to residents by installing gardens and signage at libraries and town halls to educate residents on the benefits of using native plants in their home gardens. By reducing or eliminating the use of water, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides, gardening with native plants can help to protect our rivers and streams.
